In Garry's Mod, the material "phoenix_storms/plastic" is saved as "phoenix_storms/plastic. Perhaps the easiest way to understand this is through example. Materials (besides those created with CreateMaterial) are stored in the Valve Material Type or VMT format, which is a plain-text format describing the shader and all material parameters. Materials are used mostly for rendering, but also have other effects - for example, the material will decide what sound a surface should make when it is hit. All you have to do is go to your Context Menu, then Player Models and into the 'Colors' tab. In almost all cases, at least one of the parameters will refer to a texture. Just like that old mod of mine, which redoes and allows the stunstick to have colour, this one does the same but with a 'HD' model. In Lua, a texture is represented with ITexture What is a material?Ī material is a collection of one and any number of parameters. To do: discuss different texture formats and flags A good third-party tool for creating, viewing and editing VTF textures is VTFEdit ( download). Textures in Garry's Mod are stored in the Valve Texture Format, or VTF. There are other ways that textures are used, but the way a texture is used doesn't change how the texture is stored - it is always a bitmap image. The most obvious use for them is to define what an object should look like, in color, but a texture can also be used as a bumpmaps - where the red, green and blue values of each pixel are creatively used to specify its 3D direction. This article will attempt to explain what they are and how to use them. However, they can be very confusing and intimidating for anyone not familiar with them. It certainly helped me in every way.Textures and Materials are an important integral features of the Source engine. I have just gained to an averageĨ0-130fps. These are the best and alternative ways to make gmod run on better fps. It requires you to restart gmod though, so keep that in mind. If you are using fullscreen, just disable it and it will do all the work and give you more fps. Aero extensions will basically do what it needs to do at the background but it's unable to do what it needs because of fullscreen. Since everyone is usually using normal fullscreen. Aero extensions only happen when you are using windowed mode. Many source players won't even realize that aero extensions are enabled. It can also be safer because it's genuine and straight from the actual games. Doing this will also make maps easier to load because gmod will only read the needed files. Just download all of them and just mount them. Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike Source (Most Important) Left 4 Dead 2, Orange box (Hl2,hl2ep1,hl2ep2,portal) Mount it and you get all the textures, everything will be the same and you'll get higher fps now that gmod doesn't need to read the files in one directory (Since it's mounted to the necessary games, gmod will just borrow the files instead of owning the files) and it won't burden gmod to read everything at once. This will kinda give Gmod more slower thinking time because it needs to read all the textures (Which is about 71k files) So basically to make it easier to say, textures that are downloaded online will disturb gmod's reading time and give more things to process!!īest way to fix this problem is to just buy the games. Texture packs that are downloaded from the internet are put to the same directory where other items will be (Addons and Scripts)In the same directory, gmod will read all the scripts but also the texture resources. It's better to download the original games. Since the texture packs that are downloaded for free and added to the gmod's addon directory. I also did that for about a year until I started to actually get the content from it's original games. Majority people usually use the texture files from the internet. I get that getting texture resources are kinda expensive to get.
